 ICC CWC 2023 I was ardent fan of cricket 🏏 during my childhood days. I still remember watching India-England early morning matches at 4 AM. When it used to wake up for studies, we could hardly get up and keep our turns to hide under blankets in the guise of studying while brother kept watch on Dad's surprise inspection.  Surprisingly, enthusiasm was not limited to us (brothers) only rather we used to involve everyone in the event. Discuss each and every incident during the match as if this is going to be our Board exam question paper.  Post match analysis these days are result of that only. TV networks pick up few retired cricketers and let them discuss the full match again.  Hardly matches had total of 200+ in one day matches. T20 was yet to born....  Recently when news broke of nominating V V S Lakshman as Head Coach of ICT, I was pushed back in memory lane when he used to slog for full 50 overs and team used to post only 213 !! Few years back I had an extraordinary opportunity to attend the so-called sacred and tough UPSC Interview board after clearing the gruelling written exam. Since I was pretty excited about it and hence planned it well also. I booked a good hotel in the vicinity of UPSC and checked in to it a day before to settle in there. For last few months, I am receiving spate of phone calls, emails from future aspirants of GATE & IES regarding what should be within us to crack it & even appear for such exams. Many aspirants are apprehensive whether they can clear these exams coz' they have less CGPA during graduation.  I am writing this to clear such doubts for my friends who are preparing for these exams. At this outset, I would like to give following advise to all who are preparing or planning to appear in these exams. 1. Do not think about past academic performance while preparing for these exams. What & how you will prepare will matter most.  2. These questions were asked by me to a topper when I was preparing and he answered as under. Thought to share it with you all. Ways and means to fetch more marks in Conventionals ? -  You have to be specific in conventionals. I recall that I had written very to the point answers. There were some 2 markers too where I had written just couple of lines answers. In numericals, i used to write down given data, then assumptions (if any), then a figure and after that it was plain solving without much explanation. I am not sure if this is correct strategy, but I did that.    - How to deal with sticky theory questions, how much is sufficient ? -  As I said, give correct and to the point answers. Write pointwise if possible. Time has come that reforms will touch coveted Engineering Services Exam also. Very soon we would witness following changes in the selection process and joining date for all services who join through UPSC ESE.  Considering large number of candidates writing the exam and the figure increasing every year, it is quite likely that a screening exam called "Preliminary Exam" may be included to filter serious candidates out of lacs of candidates who write UPSC-IES every year. But good news is that marks of objective type pre exam would be counted for final merit list.  New avatar of Pre Exam would include two papers - GAT & Engineering Discipline. Ever since I have cracked (IES: AIR 14, GATE: Rank 64) these two sacred exams for Engineers, I feel contented as far as clearing exams are concerned. But I have learnt a lot from the competition inherent in these exams. Lacs of candidates, millions of coaching institutes and zillions of aspiring souls in the form of parents of these candidates. These parents spend lacs on the coaching of their budding engineering sons/daughters just to satisfy themselves that they have done their duty.  According to me, if a candidate has completed his engineering or if candidate is a final year student of Engineering - Coaching is not required atleast for cracking GATE or IES !! O ne of the toughest day- if I can recall. IES exam is spread on three days -Friday, Saturday & Sunday to test your abilities through 5 papers- GAT, Paper-I (Obj), Paper-II (Obj), Conventional Paper-I, Conventional Paper-II. Torture continues till Sunday ! When I concluded my preparations, I had no idea whether I would be able to make it to the elite list of IES qualifiers. But to some extent I was satisfied with my performance, this I thought made me comfortable.
